The European Women’s Circle’s successful trip to Paris was followed in May 2004 by a three day visit to Amsterdam.

Our chairwoman contacted Hester Maij, the Deputy Mayor of Amsterdam and chairwoman of the Dutch Christian Democratic Women. During the talk, which took place in the new city hall, Hester Maij spoke about her political portfolio for the city and focused on the Dutch health care system and the political endeavours to integrate foreigners. In addition, the lively discussion touched upon the role of women in the economy and politics, and interesting aspects of childcare in the Netherlands.

It became clear that our neighbours have problems similar to ours, but choose to deal with them differently at times. Everybody was looking forward to keep in touch and expand the exchange of ideas, as the contact with the Parisian politicians after our last trip showed how rewarding this is.

The trip to Amsterdam was a politico-cultural trip with great success.

Fantastic summer weather and good restaurants underscored our group’s inherent harmony.
