In May 2008, shortly after the reelection of the conservative Nea Demokratia party, the European Women’s Circle organised a politico-cultural trip to Athens, the capital of Greece and birthplace of culture and democracy.

The European Women’s Circle, accompanied by the press, was received in the Greek parliament by Dr. Maria Kollia, MP for the Nea Demokratia, and former State Secretary Prof. Ismini Kriari-Catranis. The talk and the ensuing discussion focused on current politics, the economic situation of Greece, and the status of women. Like in other EU member states, a wage discrepancy of about 23% between men and women can be observed. Girls are disadvantaged in comparison to boys of the same age with respect to education, which leads to subsequent problems. Single mothers face especially difficult situations. The politicians feel legally and emotionally supported by the EU in their commitment to women’s rights and equal opportunity. Their dedication is strengthened by the palpable solidarity of women within the EU.

The extensive cultural programme included visits to the Acropolis, the Agora, the temple of Zeus, and the famous National Archaeological Museum with its significant antique treasures. The historic city centre, shaped by antiquity and the pulsating, modern part of Athens are in stimulating contrast to each other. From the stoic peace of the Areopagus to the turbulent market places of everyday life in this city of four millions, the impressions of this trip were unforgettable. A day trip to Cape Sounion captured the bucolic beauty of southern Greece.
